GEOFF COCHRANE
What 'Sixty Minutes' teaches
We're with an embedded camera crew
in a suburb of Baghdad.
I've wondered what they do, the Yanks,
when one of these bombs goes off,
and now I know: they storm the nearest house.
They storm the nearest house, encountering there
a skinny old woman on a walking-frame,
an old woman howling in terror and despair,
terror and despair.
In 2009, Geoff Cochrane was awarded the Janet Frame Prize for Poetry. His latest book, The Worm in the Tequila, has just been published by Victoria University Press.
