ARIANA TIKAO
Te Tārere a Hikaiti
I fell for you
muscled breath
lovebit skin
in my prime
muscled breath
like good wine
in my prime
steeped in terroir
like good wine
juiced and crushed
steeped in terroir
I leapt to my death
e rere e hine
i tēnei pari e
whana ki te hau
o Rakawhenua e
juiced and crushed
fermented heart
I leapt to my death
I sang my lament
e pupū ake
māu e tito e waiata e
ko te tārere
a Hikaiti e!
fermented heart
lovebit skin
I sang my lament
I fell for you

Tikao comments: 'Hikaiti was my ancestor whose husband decided to marry her sister, even though she objected. She dressed in her finest kākahu, perfumed herself, and leapt off a cliff near the Akaroa Heads. The italicised text is from a traditional mōteatea.'
